HIGHWAY CLEANUP COMING SOON

The Mason's annual effort to keep our community even more beautiful is scheduled for April 20th -- assuming winter has given up by then.  We will patrol a section of Highway 79 and collect anyhting which may have accidentally flown out of a vehicle window.  We'll meet at the Lodge at 6 pm and who knows what treasures we may discover?

RENEWAL OF MASTER MASON OBLIGATION

On the evening of  January 19th, some twenty-two members of Harmony Lodge 110 in Hot Springs renewed their committment to Masonry.  In a solemn ceremony, The Master Mason's Obligation was recited en-masse led by Worhsipful Master Jeff Simmons.

Supporting Our Community

One of the wonderful programs we sponsor is the Masonic Model Student Assistance Program, or, MMSAP.    The goal of this program is to train teachers and school officials   to spot kids exhibiting signs of anxiety, distress and depression that may lead to acts of self-harm, suicide or other violent acts -- before they happen.  Graduates of this program are amazed at all they learn during these seminars and equally amazed that the Masons fund all their expenses to attend.  What a great way for Masons to make a difference!

 CHIP-Child

Another activity that is proving very popular and effective is the Masonic CHIP program, which is a child identification program.  In conjunction with the National Association for Missing And Exploited Children, we provide data to parents (fingerprints, video recording, etc.), free of charge, as a tool to aid them in the case of a child abduction.  We know of at least one case in South Dakota where this program led to the safe recovery of a young girl.  Harmony Lodge 110 is proud to promote and participate in this important effort.

Due to successful fundraising efforts, our lodge is also able to provide annual scholarship awards to deserving local youth.  Feel free to contact our Lodge Secretary at

The Year Ahead

Jeff Simmons
Worshipful Master  2009 - 2010

Here we are Brothers.  2010.  We’ve made it through the first decade of the new millennium unscathed.  More or less.  As we embark on this next year, as always, it just seems natural to take a moment to reflect on what it is that we do as Masons, why we do it, and what we would like to accomplish in the future.

As  Freemasons, we are dedicated to good works and philanthropies, which lends to supporting and enhancing those around us and the communities we live in, and through the lessons and teachings of the fraternity, becoming better brothers, husbands, fathers, and in general, better men.

This year our charitable work will involve some heavy lifting as well as our normally scheduled events, the two heaviest of which we are in the middle of as of this writing.

Firstly, our annual coyote calling contest, our premier fundraiser, culminates this upcoming weekend, January 22 and 23rd.  Brothers, we need all hands for this and I will be making phone calls to all active Harmony Lodge Masons to ensure strong participation at the event itself and as importantly at our January 19th  Tuesday night special meeting to make final preparations.

We are also dealing with the Scout Center next door and exploring ways to finalize their lease of our property and what we can do to aid them in being able to financially abide by the lease thus making it easier to continue a scouting program in Hot Springs.

As to the “teachings and lessons”, the first reason for which I personally became a Mason, our lodge will continue our monthly special meeting itinerary, in which we focus on Masonic education, the actual foundation of our fraternity.

Also, several brothers in the lodge are looking to take a further step on the Masonic journey and are applying for entrance into the Scottish Rite, and attending the Scottish Rite Reunion in Deadwood on the last weekend in April.  I’m pretty excited about it.  A new year, new challenges, new opportunities, new paths.  Lets lean into it Brothers.

Happy New Year.

Masonic Thought for the Month

April  2010
